Weather Radar Workshop 2025

Basics

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) held the Weather Radar Workshop 12 to 14 February 2025 in Tokyo, Japan. The workshop is part of activities of the Regional WIGOS project "Capacity Building in Radar Techniques" in Region II and Region V (2021 - 2024) and of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee Working Group on Meteorology (WGM) Annual Operating Plan (AOP) - item 3 "Development of regional radar network".
It is important for National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) to enhance their capability in using weather radar, and to this end, two workshops had been held under the current Regional WIGOS project in order to share knowledge, experiences and challenges among the participating Members, where they covered the entire process of weather radar operations from the network design, procurement and installation to observation, maintenance and data application.
As a conclusion of the current project, the workshop reviewed the results of the previous workshops. In addition, the achievements of more than a decade of efforts to establish a regional weather radar network in Southeast Asia was presented, highlighting lessons learned as inputs to the future regional radar data exchange for the development of Regional Basic Observing Network (RBON).
