Weather Radar Workshop

Basics

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) will hold the Weather Radar Workshop in Tokyo, Japan, from 31 January to 3 February, 2023, as an activity of the Regional WIGOS project "Capacity Building in Radar Techniques" in Region II and Region V and also of item 3 "Development of regional radar network" of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) 2022 of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee Working Group on Meteorology (WGM).
This workshop follows the Weather Radar Workshop 2021 and the Typhoon Committee's technical meeting that were both held online in November 2021. The previous workshop revealed that National Meteorological and Hydrological Services(NMHSs) face various challenges regarding weather radar -such as maintenance, data quality management, human resources, and instrument resources- and that it is important for NMHSs to share and discuss their knowledge and experiences so that they can make full use of weather radars.
As a result, the JMA now plans to hold a series of radar workshops during the current WIGOS project period through 2024. Each workshop will have a specific theme, ultimately, all the challenges regarding radar observation will be addressed comprehensively.
