Weather Radar Workshop

A Weather Radar Workshop was held by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) in Tokyo, Japan, from 31 January to 3 February 2023 under a Regional WIGOS project called Capacity Building in Radar Techniques for Region II and Region V and the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee's Development of Regional Radar Network project. This followed the Weather Radar Workshop 2021 and a Typhoon Committee technical meeting both held online in November 2021.

Attendees included representatives from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates, and experts from the WMO Joint Expert Team on Operational Weather Radar (JET-OWR) from Germany (in person) and from Canada and Finland (online).

JMA plans to host a series of radar workshops up to 2024. This year focus was placed on network design, planning, procurement, installation, and implementation of weather radar. Agenda points include:

The Jan./Feb. 2023 event highlighted the current situations of attendee countries, along with challenges in weather radar, points to be considered in radar installation/replacement and technical collaboration, along with a review of the current direction and plans for data exchange under the Southeast Asian radar project.
