Weather Radar Workshop 2023

A weather radar workshop was held by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) in Tokyo, Japan, from 11 to 13 October 2023 under a Regional WIGOS project called Capacity Building in Radar Techniques for Region II and Region V and the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee's Development of a Regional Radar Network project. This followed the Weather Radar Workshop held from 31 January to 3 February 2023.

Attendees included representatives from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka (in person) and the United Arab Emirates (online).

This was the second in a series of annual weather radar workshops and focused on operation, maintenance and application of weather radar. Discussions were based on the situations of attendee countries, along with challenges in weather radar and reviews of current directions and plans for data exchange under the Southeast Asian radar project.

JMA plans a series of such workshops during the current WIGOS project period up to 2024, with each featuring a specific theme toward a comprehensive approach to challenges regarding radar observation in Asia.
