Visit by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General

On 18 February 2023, Prof. Petteri Taalas (Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)) and Dr. Stefan Uhlenbrook (Director of Hydrology, Water and Cryosphere at WMO) visited the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and held discussions with JMA Director-General OBAYASHI Masanori and representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The meeting covered topics related to the United Nations (UN) Early Warning for All initiative, which provides WMO support as an urgent climate adaptation measure, and Japan’s efforts in disaster risk reduction and international cooperation via multilateral and bilateral channels. The gathering promoted meaningful discussions on further contribution to the UN initiative. The meeting was followed by a tour of JMA headquarters with presentations on the Agency’s weather forecasting and on earthquake, tsunami and volcanic activity monitoring operations and public outreach activities.
