Visit by TMA Acting Director-General Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a
Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a, Acting Director-General of the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) and Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), visited the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) on 29 January 2026 and met with Director-General NOMURA Ryoichi. Mr. Nomura expressed sincere appreciation for Dr. Chang’a’s leadership as Vice‑Chair of the IPCC and emphasized the critical role of IPCC reports in providing scientific assessments of climate change. Dr. Chang’a also expressed gratitude for Japan’s significant ongoing contributions to the IPCC. Discussions covered areas including the importance of long-term observations to monitor climate change, and the growing roles of early warning systems in response to extreme meteorological events associated with such change.
JMA gave a number of presentations on its services, including its roles in disaster risk reduction, operation and maintenance of observation systems, and services relating to forecasting, warnings, climate, and oceanography. Dr. Chang’a especially enjoyed learning about JMA’s meteorological operational services through a tour of JMA’s forecast operations room.
The visit is considered to have provided valuable opportunities for enhanced mutual understanding and further strengthening of collaboration between TMA and JMA.
