Visit by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Assistant Administrator for Weather Services

On 16 February 2023, Kenneth Graham (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Assistant Administrator for Weather Services and Director of the U.S. National Weather Service) visited the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and met with the Director-General OBAYASHI Masanori. The meeting provided a chance to express mutual appreciation for the long-standing close partnership between the two organizations in various areas and for discussions on visions and priorities, particularly in the areas of decision support systems, observation and public/private engagements, as well as exploration of potential collaborations. Mr. Graham presented his people-centric “Ken’s 10” initiative, while Mr. Obayashi shared JMA’s Vision for Meteorological Services in 2030 and highlighted ongoing comprehensive efforts to improve forecasting capability for stationary linear mesoscale convective systems. Both acknowledged the similarities of challenges and issues facing their respective organizations, and recognized the significant benefits of sharing their efforts, practices and experience. The meeting also provided recognition of the need to further strengthen cooperation in various areas.
