Visit by Dr. Archana Shrestha, Director-General of Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology

Dr. Archana Shrestha, Director-General of Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) and Permanent Representative of Nepal with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), visited the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) on 18 June 2026 and met with its Director-General, NOMURA Ryoichi. Dr. Shrestha expressed sincere appreciation for Japan’s collaborative efforts, including the provision of observation data from its Himawari meteorological satellites. Mr. Nomura highlighted the roles of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in protecting life and property, and underscored the mutual benefits of expertise sharing in light of the common challenges posed by both countries’ mountainous terrain and susceptibility to disasters. He added that Japan can share knowledge and experience accumulated from its long history of disasters.

JMA delivered a presentation on its services, including its roles in disaster risk reduction and international cooperation, and gave a tour of the forecast operation room. Both sides agreed on continued collaboration in various areas, both bilaterally and via the WMO framework.
