Visit by CHMI Director Mr. Mark Rieder
On 1 July 2025, Mr. Mark Rieder, Director of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI), visited the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and met the Director-General NOMURA Ryoichi.
CHMI and JMA both presented an outline of their services. CHMI presented the development of its weather services throughout its long history, highlighting its enhanced flood forecasting contributed to reducing floods risks in September 2024. JMA presented the evolution of its warning services based on lessons learnt from past disaster events, and its roles and responsibilities within the national disaster risk reduction framework. Priorities, and changing environments due to climate change and emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, were also discussed. Both sides recognized that they face common issues and challenges, and agreed that strengthening of their collaboration in various fields would be mutually beneficial.
During the visit, JMA gave a couple of technical presentations detailing its flood forecast and warning practices, including its surface observation network, Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) technique, and real-time flood risk map products. The delegation also inspected JMA’s forecast operations.
