Visit by His Honorable Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman (Coordinating Minister for Social and Manpower Policies and Minister of Home Affairs of Brunei Darussalam)

On 19 October 2026, His Honorable Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman (Coordinating Minister for Social and Manpower Policies and Minister of Home Affairs of Brunei Darussalam) paid a visit to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and met with Yoshihiko Tahara, Deputy Director-General for Disaster Risk Reduction.

JMA provided a technical presentation on Japan’s Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS), and Mr. Tahara highlighted Japan’s MHEWS functions under the legally established disaster risk reduction framework and the Agency’s close coordination with disaster-related agencies. The visiting delegation was also given tours of JMA’s forecast, seismology and volcanology operational areas.

Minister Ahmaddin expressed interest in the MHEWS, particularly in how warning information is delivered to the public and key stakeholders, as well as in disaster education and public awareness initiatives.

The minister also shared information on Brunei’s experience and challenges related to flood risk management, including flooding in low-lying coastal areas and drainage issues in urban areas. Both sides agreed on the importance of sharing best practices and experience to strengthen MHEWSs in both countries.
