JMA Workshop on WMO Information System Implementation 2023 (28 – 30 November 2023)

The Global Information System Center (GISC) Tokyo ran the Workshop on World Meteorological Organization Information System Implementation from 28 to 30 November 2023 at the headquarters of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) in Tokyo, Japan. The event was attended in person by 10 representatives from five National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in Cambodia, Lao PDR, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as presenters from the GISC in Offenbach, Germany. Twenty-three representatives from Bhutan, Cambodia, Germany, Oman, the Philippines, Qatar, Thailand, Oriental Electronics, Inc. and the WMO Secretariat attended online.

Through the WIS2.0 implementation plan updated at the 76th session of the WMO Executive Council, JMA and Members were actively engaged in the pilot phase for WIS 2.0 in 2023. The workshop was positioned as a platform for user feedback, sharing of expertise, and contribution to capacity development for GISC Tokyo’s area of responsibility (AoR).

The itinerary included presentations on WIS2.0, interactive sharing of information from individual countries, hands-on training, and introductions to JMA-related activities. The event helped to enhance understanding of WIS2.0's status and related future plans, with practical experience in WIS2.0 software (wis2box) offering insights into operational flow for obtaining and providing data. GISC Tokyo remains committed to supporting all centers in its region for a full transition to WIS 2.0 by 2033.
