JMA Workshop on WMO Information System Implementation 2019

The Global Information System Center (GISC) Tokyo ran the Workshop on World Meteorological Organization Information System Implementation at JMA Headquarters in Tokyo from 11 to 12 March 2019. The event was attended by 15 representatives from six National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam, as well as presenters from the GISCs in Beijing (China), Melbourne (Australia) and Offenbach (Germany).

The main purpose of the workshop was to clarify the WMO Information System (WIS) 2.0 Implementation Approach in its role as an agenda item at the Eighteenth World Meteorological Congress in June 2019. The session aimed in particular to address emerging issues relating to burgeoning data volumes and a growing diversity of new data sources within the international meteorological information exchange framework.

Presentations were given on emerging data issues and modern industry standard technologies with focus on the need for a gradual change in the current framework for meteorological information exchange. Attendees learned about the expected delivery roles of WMO Members in today's evolving environment of new data and technology trends. Subjects included GISC Tokyo's new pilot project involving the use of cloud technologies and modern messaging protocols, and its invitation to NMHSs in its area of responsibility to join the project for preparations toward WIS 2.0 implementation. Attendees discussed and highlighted user requirements to be taken into account in the implementation of the initiative.
