11th Typhoon Committee Attachment Training at the RSMC Tokyo - Typhoon Center

The responsibility of the RSMC Tokyo - Typhoon Center operated by JMA is to assist Members of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee in typhoon analysis and forecasting services. One of the activities of the Center is to hold on-the-job trainings in typhoon operations for forecasters in the region to improve analysis and forecast skills through exchanging views and sharing experiences in the field.

This year, two forecasters, Ms. Sinthaly Chanthana (from Lao P.D.R.) and Ms. Lai Un Man (from Macao, China) visited JMA headquarters from 20 to 29 July 2011 to participate in the 11th Typhoon Committee Attachment Training. The contents of the training included:

  1. Satellite Analysis and Viewer Program (SATAID)
  2. Tropical Cyclone Analysis (Dvorak technique)
  3. Tropical Cyclone Forecast
  4. Storm Surge
  5. Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) and Forecast (QPF)

During the training, Typhoon Ma-on was approaching to Japan and two Tropical Cyclones (Nock-ten and Muifa) were generated. Ms. Lai Un Man and Ms. Sinthaly Chanthana had on-the-job training of TC analysis and forecast using these real time examples.
