International Training Seminar on Typhoon Monitoring and Forecasting in the Western North Pacific

"International Training Seminar on Typhoon Monitoring and Forecasting in the Western North Pacific" was held at the RSMC Tokyo-Typhoon Center, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) from 12 to 27 February 2004 in cooperation with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) and the Japan Weather Association (JWA).

Four forecasters and meteorologists from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in the Asia and the Pacific region participated in the Seminar.

Participants took the training in analysis of position and intensity of typhoons on PC using the program "GMSLPD". GMSLPD, application software for typhoon analysis developed by the Meteorological Satellite Center, was provided to the participants for utilization at their respective NMHSs.

The participants also made visits to JMA local observatories, a local government, a broadcast company as well as an electric power company in Kagoshima and learned the importance of the cooperation among relevant organizations concerning disaster prevention and preparedness.

At the end of the Seminar, an extensive discussion on disaster prevention and preparedness activities was held, focusing on tropical cyclone disasters.

The participants shared recent knowledge and techniques of typhoon monitoring and forecasting through the above programs and successfully completed the Seminar.
