Technical Meeting on Radar QC and QPE with TMD and MMD Experts
(Tokyo, Japan, 12 – 15 December 2017)

The ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee (TC) promotes the development of a regional radar network covering Southeast Asia. To support this goal, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) held a technical meeting on radar QC and QPE at its headquarters from 12 to 15 December 2017 with four invited experts from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) and the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD).

At the meeting, experts from TMD and MMD reported on the current status of their weather radar networks and progress in quality control of radar data and Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE). In relation to the experimental exchange of radar composite data among TMD, MMD and JMA, JMA reported on the results of statistical analysis involving relevant data.

The experts discussed the development and improvement of QPE techniques as well as the utilization of Doppler velocity data. Also discussed were the calibration and quality control of radar data, especially utilization of dual polarization parameters in quality control.

At the end of the meeting, the group members exchanged views on future plans for project activities, including expansion of the regional radar network. It was agreed that TMD, MMD and JMA should play a primary project role based on the sharing of their experiences with other countries in the region, and should expand the radar network in conformity with the WMO RA II/V WIGOS project on weather radar.
