Visit by the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization 20 – 22 February 2017

Petteri Taalas, the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), visited the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) from 20 to 22 February 2017 in conjunction with his attendance at the 49th Session of ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee, held in Yokohama.

Professor Taalas met Toshihiko Hashida, Director-General of JMA and Permanent Representative of Japan with WMO. The two leaders exchanged views on the collaborative relationship enjoyed between WMO and JMA and further possibilities of JMA’s contribution to WMO activities.

Professor Taalas was given presentations on several JMA's international activities and the attendees discussed related matters in areas such as the use of Himawari satellite products, regional climate services, greenhouse gases monitoring and capacity development activities on weather radar.

His lecture on WMO was attended by a capacity audience in JMA’s lecture hall. Those present shared his passion for WMO’s contribution to global issues, such as climate change and disaster risk reduction.
