Technical Meeting on Radar Composite Map for Thailand
Tokyo, Japan, 25 - 28 November 2013

The ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee (TC) promotes the development of a regional radar network covering Southeast Asia. To support this goal, JMA held a radar composite map technical meeting from 25 to 28 November 2013, with two invited experts from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).

During the meeting, JMA experts gave a series of lectures covering information necessary for the creation of a high-quality radar composite map, such as elevation angle composite tables, coordinate transformation techniques and echo intensity at lowest levels.

Using JMA's radar beam visibility analysis tool, both sets of experts collectively improved the elevation angle composite tables created by TMD in advance of the meeting for radar stations at Phuket, Krabi, Sathing Phra and Chumphon. A TMD radar composite map based on data from four radars was successfully produced with these improved tables.

The attendees also discussed how to progress with extending the TMD radar composite map to cover the whole of Thailand with a view to beginning the development of related products such as Qualitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) data.
