Visit by BMKG Deputy Director-General Dr. Yunus Swarinoto and delegation on 9 September 2016

The Deputy Director-General for Meteorology at the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency of Indonesia (BMKG), Dr. Yunus Swarinoto, led a delegation on a visit to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) on 9 September 2016. Eight experts from the delegation attended satellite training events at JMA headquarters and the Meteorological Satellite Center (MSC) from 8 to 14 September.

BMKG plans to install the HimawariCast System in order to enable receipt of satellite data from JMA's latest geostationary meteorological satellite, Himawari-8/9, and intends to utilize the data for its operations. The primary purposes of the delegation's visit were to prepare for the installation and undergo the technical training provided by JMA.

Dr. Swarinoto and his delegation paid a visit to JMA Director-General Dr. Toshihiko Hashida on 9 September. They also took a tour of JMA operational centers and discussed future collaboration between BMKG and JMA in fields such as weather satellites and radar.

The BMKG experts attended the training to enable better use of Himawari-8/9 data in Indonesia. The sessions were tailored to BMKG's requirements and consisted of presentations on satellite observation, new products such as red-green-blue (RGB) composite imagery and basic satellite analysis, and included practical exercises using the Satellite Analysis and Viewer Program (SATAID).

Interpretation and utilization of satellite data and related reception/processing are vitally important elements of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services' capacity to handle new-generation satellite output. JMA remains committed to assisting these services in the utilization of such data.
