Resumption of tsunami and tide level observation in the earthquake affected area

tentative tsunami observation stations

The tsunami caused by the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake on 11th March 2011 inflicted massive damage to the tsunami and tide level observation stations in the Pacific coast of Tohoku region and northern part of Kanto region (Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi Fukushima and Ibaraki Prefectures).

Since it is expected to take a considerable amount of time to recover these damaged stations completely, JMA installs tentative observation stations nearby the former observation points and resumes tsunami and tide level observation in the earthquake affected area from late July. This enables JMA to watch tsunami and tide level in equivalent system to that before 11 March.

JMA uses the same names of observation stations in tsunami information since tentative observation stations are installed nearby the former observation points. Data of tide level observed at these stations are immediately opened to the public on the Tide Observation Information of our website (only in Japanese).
