On February 27, 2010, an earthquake and tsunami hit the middle of Chile and caused devastating damage.
The tsunami traveled across the Pacific ocean and reached the coast of Japan about one day after the occurrence of the earthquake.
Just 2 months after the earthquake and tsunami, Mr. Alfredo Moreno Charme, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile visited JMA on April 27 to see JMA's earthquake phenomena observation system.
The Minister gave a courtesy call for Mr Kunio Sakurai, the Director-General of JMA, and listened to an explanation on the JMA's work on earthquakes and tsunamis from the Director-General.
The Minister praised JMA's professional earthquake phenomena observation system, and extended his hope to receive cooperation from Japan to establish an early warning system.
