International Workshop on the Hazardous Winds Associated with Severe Storms (9 -11 January 2008)

International Workshop on the Hazardous Winds Associated with Severe Storms (9 -11 January 2008)   Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) held the International Workshop on the Hazardous Winds Associated with Severe Storms in Tokyo, Japan from 9 to 11 January 2008, including the public symposium on 11 January, under the auspices of the Ocean Policy Research Foundation.

In the Workshop, 11 invited researchers/experts from Australia, Canada, China, Germany and the United States and four from Japan shared and discussed the findings and knowledge of tornadoes and other hazardous winds from the latest research and current operational systems, in order to deepen the understanding of tornadoes and other hazardous winds. JMA introduced its recent activities to enhance the ability of its operational meteorological observation radar network and its effort to develop the techniques of detecting tornadoes and severe winds.

In the Symposium on the final day, the outcome of the Workshop was shared with approximately 230 attendants from government, academia and the private sector. In response to researchers' suggestions made to enhance research activities and meteorological services in this field, Professor Hiroshi Niino of the University of Tokyo summarized those suggestions, showing direction of future research activities and international cooperation in this field.
